How do we feed ourselves when we can’t get out of bed? When we aren’t even sure we want to be alive? When every time we try to make rice, it feels like the first time?
misery meals is a 260 page choose-your-own-adventure collection of recipes, art and resources by mad and disabled, queer and trans, global majority people world-over, to be used always, but especially when we’re feeling miserable. This is an intuitive guide for when we need to eat but aren’t sure exactly when or what or fucking how. Think of it as an anti-cookbook.
The wisdoms of disabled, queer and colonised people were never the purview of those communities alone. Everyone needs to know how to nourish ourselves when we can’t move, when we have limited ingredients, when we’ve lost all hope. We could all do with the space to listen to and work with our bodies just a little bit more. We deserve it!
This book explores no-cook cooking, no-chew eating and no-appetite nutrition, to reimagine the cookbook as a place where access needs around nourishment are centred through an artistic, radical, mental health, crip justice lens.
We’ve designed this book as a journey from 0-5 spoons, with the different spoon levels indicating how much energy / focus / will to live, i.e. - “spoons” - the reader (you) has available for making a meal. Each spoon level has its own mascot who will guide you through their chapter. Each chapter has a title page, introducing the mascot, and providing more information about what the bodymind may be experiencing at that spoon level, and what kind of recipes and resources to expect in that chapter.
As well as recipes, we’ve crowd-sourced crip cooking hacks, developed a food safety plan and written trauma-informed guides to food shopping, batch cooking and appetite regulation. The book also features a fold-out Y2K-esque flow chart, which helps guide you to the part of the book that may be most supportive to you!
misery meals is a love letter to the sad stomach, the bloated brain, the soupy soul. This is for all of us! This has been all of us! And there’s no shame in any of it.
misery meals online cook-along <3
to celebrate misery meals coming to life, we wanna get us all in the same room, whether near or far, for an online cook-along where we’ll make (and eat) a recipe from the cookbook together!
join us on wednesday 25 feb from 6.30-8.30pm in the misery zoom room for a special collective dinner date to cook, chat n chill.
we’ll be coming to you live from the kitchen to guide you through the cooking process in real time. for those wanting to cook along with us, we’ll be sending you an ingredient list the week ahead so you can stock up in time.
don’t think you’ll have the spoons to cook along? no stress, come thru to chat n chill, we’d love to see you, hear you, and give you a sneak peek of the cookbook :)
pls note, this is a safe(r) space exclusively for queer, trans, intersex and non-binary, black people and people of colour.
